Kohima: Legal and administrative officials descended on the District Jail in Mokokchung on Friday to audit inmate conditions. The third-quarter inspection followed a previous May 12 review, checking progress on pending safety repairs. Victo Sema, Principal District and Sessions Judge, led the team alongside Kumdilong Kessen, Assistant Commissioner Dr. Madhavi R, Additional Superintendent of Police I Bunlang Chang, and department representatives.
Walls are failing. The team resolved to demand immediate funding from the Deputy Inspector General to rebuild the crumbling perimeter and add a dedicated sentry post. They also plan to pressure the District Planning and Development Board to finalize a previously approved footpath within the prison grounds.
The authorities are shifting focus to inmate rehabilitation. They want to partner with the Industrial Training Institute to provide formal computer literacy training and certification. Officials will categorize inmates by skill set and tap the District Industries Officer for raw materials to jumpstart internal work programs.
Health remains a priority. The committee will coordinate with the Chief Medical Officer to bring in psychiatric care. The Youth Resources Department handed over two volleyballs, a net, and three footballs to help inmates stay active. MDLSA Panel Lawyer Molo Jamir confirmed the urgency of the situation, noting they requested authorities to ensure "early implementation of the decisions in the interest of the safety, security and overall welfare of inmates."
