Kohima: Nagaland entrepreneurs recently finished a two-day technology clinic focused on modern meat processing. The Department of Industries and Commerce paired with the Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation Ltd to host the event. It ran August 20 and 21 in Khanapara, Guwahati. The training took place at the College of Veterinary Science, part of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University.
Dr. B.N. Saikia served as the chief guest for the opening. He highlighted the urgent need to move beyond raw sales. He stated, "The need to shift from raw meat sales to value-added products to enhance profitability, reduce post-harvest losses and extend shelf life."
Experts taught practical skills. Trainees handled hygienic poultry slaughtering, meat preservation, and complex packaging. They learned to make smoked meats, emulsion-based chicken items, and ready-to-eat shelf-stable goods. Additional sessions focused on commercial marketing, waste management, and by-product usage.
The training featured a large team of faculty and scientists. Resource persons included Dr. Ankur Das, Dr. Protiva Gogoi, Dr. S.K. Laskar, Dr. Santosh Upadhyay, Dr. Sadhana Choudhury, Dr. Kushal Jyoti Thakuria, Dr. Gaichamdinliu Gonmei, Er. Anil Sharma, and Dr. Masuk Raquib. The initiative falls under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance scheme. This World Bank-backed project from the Government of India aims to boost market access and capacity for local businesses following the pandemic.
