Kohima: Educated unemployed youth held an angling competition this past Saturday at Z Lotha Fisheries in Ekok-Ju village, Wokha. The event aimed to boost community ties and show how outdoor activities can spark new business paths. It drew families and fishing fans together for a day of local competition.
Pipen Erui took home the top prize of Rs 50,000. Shanpemo Kithan grabbed second place and Rs 25,000, while Aben Murry finished third with a Rs 10,000 payout. The contest operated under a strict one person, one rod rule. Organizers also handed out two special prizes of Rs 3,000 each for the Biggest Catch and the First Catch, plus 10 consolation prizes worth Rs 2,500 apiece.
NSCN (R) president Akato Chophy sponsored the second-place award to help back the efforts of the organizers. Various other individuals chipped in to cover the consolation prizes, ensuring the day went off without a hitch. The group behind the event noted, "The organisers also received support from several other individuals who sponsored the consolation prizes, contributing to the successful conduct of the event."
Nagaland has plenty of water and fish. This makes angling a rising trend for the state. Organizers believe these community ventures prove that young people can build their own sustainable livelihoods. They want to encourage others to look at self-employment through recreation.
