Nagaland Mourns Death of Oking Hospital Founder Dr. Vikethonyü Kesiezie

Kohima: Nagaland bid farewell to Dr. Vikethonyü Kesiezie on Tuesday. Mourners gathered at the Golden Jubilee Hall, Cathedral in Kohima to honor the surgeon and founder of Oking Hospital and Research Clinic. He died on August 17. He was 63.

Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio joined other dignitaries to pay respects. Born on May 22, 1961, to Thinuoseo and Neisieil Kesiezie, the doctor started his MBBS in 1979 and finished his Master of Surgery in 1987. He left government service to build Oking Clinic, which grew into a key medical hub for the state.

The doctor did not just stay in his office. He worked with the Church and his staff to reach remote, underserved villages. His hospital also partnered with the Smile Train Shija Cleft Project to offer free surgery for people with cleft conditions. This program remains a core part of his medical legacy.

Associate Pastor Khotuo Richa of Khedi Baptist Church led the funeral service. Former Chief Secretary Lalthara delivered the eulogy. During the service, officials read a message from Chief Minister Rio. He called the late doctor "a dedicated doctor and humanitarian who left a lasting impact on Nagaland’s healthcare sector."

Dr. Kesiezie leaves behind his wife, Zothangpuii Kesiezie, and their four children. He spent his career treating patients from all walks of life.
