Kohima: A massive landslide wiped out National Highway 702A at New Colony in Zunheboto. The road is gone. By 8:30 pm on August 18, the highway was entirely impassable for all vehicles. The ground remains active. Fresh debris and soil continue to slide down from the hillside, worsening the situation as the night progresses.
Homes already dismantled earlier that morning have vanished under the advancing slide. The destruction has now pushed toward the area above the Assam Rifles camp. Witnesses describe the scene as treacherous. People on site are currently forced to navigate the soft, unstable earth on foot while others stand guard to monitor the ongoing movement of the hillside.
Authorities issued an immediate warning to stay away. Travellers should avoid this stretch of the highway until further notice. Officials suggest an alternative path for those needing to move through the area. "The road has been completely washed away, leaving no portion of the highway passable for vehicular movement," a local Colony GB confirmed. Motorists can take the Lizu-Naghuto route via the Assam Rifles camp and Old Town Colony to bypass the damage.
