Kohima: A stretch of National Highway-702A at New Colony in Zunheboto is failing. Heavy rainfall triggered severe cracks and ground movement, endangering the road and local homes. The situation deteriorated sharply over the last three days. Soil below the highway is sliding away, taking trees and dirt with it.
Two families dismantled their houses this morning. Their structures became unsafe as cracks tore through rooms and kitchens. One resident used ropes to stabilize a house, but it was not enough. Other homes in the area now show signs of structural failure. Residents fear the ground will give way entirely.
"We are not hoping for any financial assistance, but at least some measures should be taken at the earliest so that the house does not collapse. How will we dismantle these houses and where will we go?" a resident asked. The locals blame the instability on debris from previous years of work at the Alahuto landslide site.
This road connects Zunheboto to Lumami and Mokokchung. A collapse would cut off a vital supply line. Residents want the District Administration and Zunheboto Town Council to intervene now. They also demand repairs to the alternate route near the Assam Rifles Camp to keep traffic moving if the highway fails.
