Kohima: A massive landslide wiped out a section of National Highway 702A between Satakha and Kilomi Village on August 1. Continuous rainfall turned the mountain pass into a mess of mud and rock, trapping heavy vehicles and stopping all traffic cold.
Crews from BIMA Project Pvt. Ltd., working under Madhucon Company and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, tried to clear the wreckage once already. The road reopened briefly before a second surge of debris buried the highway again. Toikhu Zhimo, the public relations officer for the project, said crews face a tough road ahead. "If the weather improves and rainfall subsides, it is expected to take at least one and a half days to clear the debris and restore traffic," Zhimo said.
Constant rain complicates the job. New slides could add two or more days to the cleanup schedule. Officials have shut down the route indefinitely to ensure safety while the mud remains unstable.
Drivers must use detours until further notice. Traffic heading from the Satakha side now flows through the Xuivi Village diversion. Those traveling from the Kilomi side must use the Yezhimo Village road. Authorities warned motorists to stay alert on these secondary paths, as the same heavy rain creating the blockage threatens to trigger more slides across the region.
