Kohima: A massive landslide wiped out Zunheboto’s sole water supply line on July 20. The damage occurred along the Tizu Bridge and Yezami Road. The town now faces a severe water crisis. For years, residents relied entirely on this 150 mm mainline. It brings water from Ngozubo and Melahu villages to the North Point colony reservoir. The tank holds 4 lakh liters.
Sub-Divisional Officer Er Beto T Jimo stated that the repairs will take over one month. The terrain is a nightmare. Both the road and the pipe lie in ruins. "The landslide has rendered the site inaccessible, making repair and reinstatement of the damaged infrastructure extremely challenging," Jimo said.
The department needs 40 to 50 specialized pipe sections. These were originally sourced from Mumbai to handle intense water pressure. Ordinary pipes will burst under the load. Workers have recovered only 10 sections after several days of digging. The landslide washed away the original alignment. Engineers must now carve a new path through a coffee plantation.
The town has 1,300 metered PHED consumers. The department cannot begin heavy repairs until the road is cleared. PHED personnel asked the public for patience while they struggle against the difficult terrain. Officials confirmed there is no backup water source for the town.
