Shillong: East Khasi Hills residents face strict rules for Diwali this year. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal confirmed residents may only set off fireworks during two specific time windows: 6 am to 7 am and 8 pm to 10 pm. These hours follow Supreme Court mandates. Failure to comply brings risks.
Baranwal pushed for caution. He told reporters, "Bursting of firecrackers during Diwali celebrations in East Khasi Hills will be permitted only between 6 am and 7 am and 8 pm and 10 pm, in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines." He demanded people avoid lighting crackers near hospitals or old-age homes.
Open spaces only. Keep kids away from active fire zones. Do not launch sky crackers near tall buildings or trees. Everyone must buy and use green crackers certified by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, known as CSIR-NEERI. These help limit air and noise pollution. Sector magistrates will patrol the streets to watch for violations and handle emergencies. The deputy commissioner asked for a celebration defined by unity, compassion, and communal harmony.
