East Khasi Hills Tightens Safety Rules for Durga Puja

Shillong: East Khasi Hills authorities are cracking down on safety protocols for Durga Puja. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal met with the Central Puja Committee, police, and utility officials on Tuesday to coordinate event security. Committees must now install CCTV cameras and field volunteers, including Home Guard and Aapda Mitra personnel, to watch the crowds.

Pandals need separate entry and exit points. Disaster management rules demand a wide buffer between cooking stations and any fire hazards. Sector magistrates will patrol sites to verify compliance. Baranwal stated, "The administration has inspected the ghat currently under development as part of the riverfront project."

Crews are raising low-hanging electrical and telecom lines. This move protects the transit of idols. Officials are also restricting crowd sizes and setting firm immersion schedules. The Central Puja Committee asked for faster departmental clearances. The administration is now working with agencies to speed up the process for organizers.
