Kohima: The Ungma Senso Telongjem Dimapur (USTD) reached a major milestone this Friday. Members gathered at Senden Riju in Purana Bazar to mark 50 years of the organization since its 1976 founding. The event followed the theme Terajem Loki Mera. It brought together community members and representatives from various Ao organizations to discuss their history and future.
Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer attended as the chief guest. He spoke plainly about the state of the youth. He noted that while young people have energy and talent, they often lack direction in their careers. "Nagaland’s youth constituted a significant part of the population and possessed considerable potential, energy and talent," Longkumer said. He urged leaders to push the younger generation toward skill-based and data-driven jobs instead of relying only on traditional government work.
Water Resources Department advisor Tongpang Ozukum served as the guest of honor. He pushed for personal accountability. Ozukum told the crowd that real change does not come from political talk. He argued that progress requires practical work and individual ownership within families and institutions. Former Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. S.C. Jamir also sent greetings, focusing on the need for the community to embrace modern lifestyle shifts while keeping a unified purpose.
State Election Commissioner T. John Longkumer reminded the crowd of Ungma’s historical weight. He linked the village to the roots of Ao customary law and the early spread of Christianity in the region. Other speakers included Nungsangmeren Jamir of the Ungma Village Council, OSTD president T. Benjong Longchar, and Imkongsowa Jamir from the Kohima branch. Former USTD president Er. Tsuknung Jamir asked the community to use its collective education to drive change.
The event featured a packed program. A jubilee song titled Jubilee Küm echoed through the venue. Tiameren Aier performed, while the Wasomung choir and poet Meyisangla Jamir provided special presentations. Speaker Longkumer and souvenir committee convenor Lipokmeren C. Longkumer officially released the jubilee souvenir. Pastor Marnungba Longkumer opened the day with prayer, and Planning Committee convenor Imnatoshi Longkumer closed the event with a vote of thanks.
