Dr. S.C. Jamir Urges Nagaland to Look Beyond Past at Golden Jubilee

Kohima: Former Nagaland Chief Minister and Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. S.C. Jamir challenged the Ao community to pivot toward a progressive future. The call came Friday at the 50th Golden Jubilee of the Ungma Senso Telongjem Dimapur (USTD) at Senden Riju. Jamir, a veteran leader who served as Governor of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Odisha, demanded more than just a trip down memory lane. He wants collective responsibility. The event operated under the theme Focus on Life and Service to the Naga Community.

Dr. Jamir told the crowd, "The more important question is not merely how we lived in the past, but how we choose to live on in the present and into the future." The assembly featured Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer as chief guest. Water Resources Advisor Tongpang Ozukum attended as the guest of honor. Representatives from the Ungma Village Council, Ongpangkong Senso Telongjem Dimapur, and Ungma Senso Telongjem Kohima delivered greetings.

T. John Longkumer highlighted the deep connection between the Ungma people and their in-laws, labeling the village a vital source of Ao Naga customary law. He insisted that the current generation protect this heritage. Advisor Tongpang Ozukum praised the pioneers of the USTD for their perseverance. He urged citizens to embrace positivity.

Speaker Sharingain Longkumer challenged the group to draft a vision for the next 25 years. He set three goals: youth-focused human resource development, the preservation of identity, and the courage to meet social and economic challenges. He argued that true strength requires unity. Prosperity starts at home. Respect and forgiveness remain the foundation for every neighborhood and village.
