Kohima: The United Women Welfare Organisation hit its golden jubilee on October 24. Members gathered at Children’s Park in Supply Colony, Dimapur, to mark five decades of community service. The group has focused on underprivileged women and children since 1976.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Tinojongshi Chang served as chief guest. He praised the group for its long history of perseverance. He noted that the organization’s work is a tribute to founder Daisy Yaden. Yaden led the group for 47 years until she passed away.

UWWO president Amenla Saku reflected on the organization's roots. The group held its first meeting on May 22, 1976. Saku described the work as the effort of a “Good Samaritan” for the benefit of society. She emphasized that the group survives through the hard work of its members.

The organization runs several key programs. They manage the Children’s Park in Supply Colony, a project started in 1987. They also operate the UWWO Play Centre, formerly known as Balwati. The school takes in 50 children aged two-and-a-half to four years each year. Roughly 1,800 children have attended the center before moving to mainstream schools.

UWWO offers more than just childcare. They provide free medical check-ups and host training sessions on hygiene and home management. They also teach embroidery and tailoring to out-of-school girls. Secretary Martha H. Walling chaired the event. Col. Rajeev Sharma of the 30 Assam Rifles also spoke. The celebration ended with a benediction from Watila, the oldest member of the group.
