Meghalaya Stays Alert as Cyclone Brews in Bay of Bengal

Shillong: Meghalaya remains on alert while a weather system intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. Forecasters expect the system to turn into a cyclonic storm by October 26. The India Meteorological Department released these findings in Special Message No. 4 at 1 pm on Saturday.

The system began as a low-pressure area over the east-central and south-east Bay of Bengal. Experts expect it to become a depression today, October 24, and a deep depression tomorrow, October 25. By October 28, the storm should reach the coast near Andhra Pradesh. While heavy rain threatens Odisha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal, Meghalaya currently lacks a specific warning.

Gale-force winds will hit 70 to 80 kmph, with gusts reaching 90 kmph. High seas will batter the region from October 26 to 28. Officials warned fishermen to stay clear of the water. The department advised authorities to prepare coastal zones for the impact. Despite the regional threat, Meghalaya officials are simply watching the weather for now. Future forecasts will dictate any changes to local alerts.

The IMD stated, "The system is expected to strengthen winds over the Bay of Bengal." Officials will provide another update at 1 pm on Sunday, October 25.
