Shillong: The India Meteorological Department placed Meghalaya under a Yellow Alert. Storms are hitting hard. The state faces moderate to very heavy rainfall through July 25 due to an active southwest monsoon. Expect isolated lightning and intense downpours across the region.
The alert remains in effect specifically for July 22 and 23. Conditions should begin to ease starting July 24. Weather officials warned of major risks. Possible hazards include waterlogging, flash flooding, reduced visibility, uprooted trees, and blocked transport routes.
Rainfall figures from the last 24 hours show the scale of the incoming weather. Sohra topped the charts with 278.6 mm. Umiam saw 106.4 mm, and Mawsynram recorded 84 mm. The IMD issued a clear warning for citizens, stating, "Residents are advised to stay alert and follow official bulletins." Officials expect the wet weather to affect many locations through the end of the week.
