Shillong: The India Meteorological Department issued a storm alert for Meghalaya. Heavy rain and lightning will hit the state for the next five days. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati expects moderate rain across the region this Thursday.
Rain will slacken slightly for two days before picking up again on August 2. Forecasters expect isolated heavy downpours on Thursday, Friday, and August 3. Thunderstorms will persist throughout the weekend. Officials pointed to an active southwest monsoon, a trough over central India, and a cyclonic circulation over central Assam as the cause.
Rain gauges filled up fast over the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 am Thursday. Mawsynram and Jowai led the state with 8 cm of rain each. Mawkyrwat saw 7 cm, Sohra received 4 cm, while Mawphlang and Shillong recorded 3 cm and 2 cm respectively.
The weather service issued a stark warning. "The IMD has also cautioned that heavy downpours could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, reduced visibility and disruptions to road transport and power supply." Authorities told residents to stay away from unstable structures and keep a close eye on incoming weather reports.
