Indian Foreign Secretary to Visit Nepal Ahead of PM Shah Trip

Shillong: Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri lands in Kathmandu on November 4 for a two-day mission. The trip ends November 5. He aims to prep the stage for Prime Minister Balendra Shah to visit New Delhi later this month. Both nations confirmed the schedule on Monday.

Misri will sit down with Nepali Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai for bilateral talks. He will also pay courtesy calls on senior dignitaries. The agenda covers regional and global concerns along with existing ties. India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated, "The Foreign Secretary’s upcoming visit continues the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries and will help further enhance the comprehensive bilateral partnership."

Nepal expects to land a major financial aid package following the heavy floods on August 26. The government also wants to iron out border disputes and rework the current trade treaty. Officials are pushing for new air entry points for international flights. Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "The two sides will review the full range of Nepal-India relations and exchange views on matters of mutual interest, with a view to further strengthening the long-standing, close and friendly ties between the two countries."

Both sides hope to open several cooperation projects during the upcoming Prime Minister visit. Misri was previously slated to visit in May after Balendra Shah formed the government with the Rastriya Swatantra Party, but protocol clashes pushed the trip back.
