Shillong: India is sending a massive surge of electricity to Nepal. New Delhi authorized an 18-hour daily power supply through December 31. The Ministry of Power cleared the export of 600MW via the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV line and 54MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV line. The arrangement supports the Nepal Electricity Authority following widespread destruction of local hydropower infrastructure.
The power deal is set to run through 2026, with a review scheduled for December of that year. An official statement noted, "The Ministry of Power has accorded approval for the export of power, for 18 hours a day to Nepal Electricity Authority till December 31, 2026." This support aims to stabilize Nepal as it digs out from a disaster triggered by an August 26 ice-rock avalanche near the Tibet border.
Death tolls keep climbing. Officials confirmed 1,386 fatalities across eight districts, with 104 bodies identified and returned to families. Over 5,130 people remain missing. Security forces have pulled 13,700 survivors from the mud, while 339 victims occupy hospital beds.
India remains on the ground. The Indian Air Force is flying in relief supplies, including lighting towers, dewatering pumps, and portable generators. Rescuers are also using specialized DNA kits and gas detectors provided by New Delhi. The mission continues as the country struggles to recover from the devastation.
