Gangtok: A 3.9-magnitude earthquake shook the Mangan district in Sikkim early Tuesday. The tremor hit at 1:48 am IST at a depth of 7 km. National Centre for Seismology data puts the epicentre at 27.638°N latitude and 88.766°E longitude.
Disaster grips Nepal. The national death toll from flash floods climbed to 903 on Monday, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. Authorities report 4,247 people remain missing while 10,451 survivors have been rescued.
Chitwan suffers the highest losses with 272 deaths. Other casualties include 207 in Nawalparasi (East), 151 in Nawalparasi (West), 95 in Nuwakot, 62 in Gorkha, 55 in Dhading, 37 in Tanahun, and 24 in Rasuwa.
Missing lists grow longer. Data shows 1,548 missing in Nuwakot and 865 in Rasuwa. Hydropower projects account for 933 missing persons, while 592 foreign nationals and 65 people in Makwanpur remain unaccounted for. Official records indicate the list includes 45 Nepal Army personnel, 25 Nepal Police members, 15 Customs Office workers, 13 Armed Police Force members, and three Immigration Office staff.
Rescuers continue their search. The Nepal Army has flown 3,344 Nepali citizens and 252 foreign nationals to safety. Authorities warned of ongoing danger as the agency stated, "Nepal remained under a flash flood alert on August 29, with authorities warning of rising water levels in rivers and streams across several districts."
