Gangtok: Sikkim’s Mangan district administration is tightening its grip on flood security. Officials ramped up early warning protocols across vulnerable Himalayan rivers and glacial lakes. This push follows devastating flash floods that recently battered Nepal. The threat remains high.
District Collector Anant Jain confirmed that high-risk glacial lakes now use automated systems for constant water level checks. Teams installed night-vision cameras to keep eyes on these sites during the dark. “Whenever the water level of the lake increases or decreases, the information goes to the headquarters and is sent to the district administration,” Jain said.
Technical gear now blankets the Thangu-Lachung stretch. Crews set up four monitoring points along the Moguthang axis to track concentrated water flow. Two more units guard the Lachung side. These tools measure the speed and height of the water, relaying data to headquarters in real-time.
Officials are pushing residents away from dangerous zones. Construction and encroachment on riverbanks have dropped after multiple warnings. A new river-training project sits in the final stages of approval. Once finished, this wall will protect the region from surges. “If the work is sanctioned and the whole river training work starts, then it will be very helpful to mitigate [flood risk],” Jain said.
