Assam Flood Death Toll Hits 99 As Relief Operations Continue

Guwahati: The death toll from Assam's ongoing floods climbed to 99 by August 8. While the number of affected districts dropped to 12, the waters continue to impact 1.47 lakh people across 460 villages. The disaster persists across 30 revenue circles in Sonitpur, Nagaon, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Hojai, Darrang, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Charaideo, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, and Biswanath.

Golaghat remains the hardest hit area with 61,735 residents affected. Sivasagar follows with 43,492, while Jorhat reports 24,283 impacted people. The total affected population includes 65,962 men, 63,037 women, and 18,377 children. Floodwaters have submerged 10,599.89 hectares of cropland.

Infrastructure took a heavy hit. Sivasagar recorded 324 damaged houses, with 176 fully destroyed and 148 partially ruined. Golaghat saw seven road stretches damaged, and Hojai reported two embankment issues. No bridge damage was noted in the latest reports. The Central Water Commission confirmed three rivers remain above the danger level: the Dhansiri (South) at Golaghat and Numaligarh, and the Kushiyara at Sribhumi. None have surpassed the highest flood levels.

Authorities have set up 94 relief sites, including 53 camps and 41 distribution centers. Currently, 8,568 people stay in these camps. Sivasagar shelters the most evacuees, housing 4,862 people. Relief workers and rescue teams are active. Agencies involved include the SDRF, DDRF, and Fire and Emergency Services. Teams have saved many residents from rising waters. "Rescue operations have so far evacuated 135 people by boats, with operations involving SDRF, DDRF, Fire and Emergency Services and other agencies." Five additional people were saved by helicopter.
