Shillong: East Khasi Hills officials hauled away 200 kg of abandoned telecom wires and junction boxes. The cleanup follows a direct order from Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to scrub the city of visual clutter. Crews targeted loose lines strung between utility poles throughout the area.
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal surveyed the work on Friday. He confirmed that all remaining wires were clamped tight while the dead weight hit the scrap heap. New rules now demand stricter cable organization, mandatory labelling for junction boxes, and specific minimum heights for all installations.
Baranwal issued a blunt ultimatum to service providers. Companies that ignore these standards will see their gear seized and destroyed. Regarding future compliance, he warned, "any new cables found hanging loosely will be cut and removed." The administration expects to finish this sweep within the next month.
