Shillong: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills issued a new directive this week. It follows the Registration of Births and Deaths Amendment Act of 2026. This federal law took effect on October 1, 2026. The Ministry of Law and Justice, specifically the Legislative Department, drafted these changes.
Registration rules changed. Any birth or death reported more than two years after the event now requires a specific legal procedure. Applicants must obtain an order from a Judicial Magistrate of the First Class. Executive Magistrates no longer hold the authority to approve these delayed filings. All pending or fresh applications beyond the two-year window must head directly to the competent Judicial Magistrate First Class. The office confirmed these requirements under the amended Section 13 of the Act. "All pending or fresh applications beyond two years must be filed/presented directly before the competent Judicial Magistrate First Class under the amended Section 13 of the Act," the statement said.
