Shillong: George C. Sun defected to the Voice of the People Party on Monday. He previously served as president of the Mawphlang Block Congress Committee and secretary for the East Khasi Hills District Congress Committee. Sun brought his supporters to a reception held in Mawngap. The politician previously ran for the Mawphlang-Diengiei constituency in the 2025 KHADC elections but lost.
VPP president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit officially welcomed the former youth leader into the fold. Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang attended the event alongside various party MDCs from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council. Members of the VPP Women’s Wing also stood in attendance.
Sun explained his exit from Congress by pointing to widespread frustration with the political status quo. He claimed the VPP offers a necessary path forward for voters. "Growing public disillusionment with political leaders had created the need for an alternative that could restore people’s hope in politics," Sun stated. He insisted his move was not a bid for a guaranteed ticket in future elections, noting he would leave any decision on his candidacy to the party leadership.
