Shillong: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress president Vincent H. Pala says the Voice of the People Party is bleeding support. The VPP rode a wave of social media hype during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. That wave is dead. Pala claims the party is losing ground across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills after visiting several of their former strongholds.
The decline looks sharp in Mylliem, Sohra, and the border areas of Pynursla. Jaintia Hills also shows shrinking support for the regional party. Pala dismissed their recent political momentum as a fading trend. The Congress leader pointed to the VPP's work in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council as proof of their failure. He cited controversy over the removal of traditional chiefs, or Syiems, and ongoing legal battles as evidence of poor leadership. "He referred to controversies surrounding the removal of traditional chiefs, or Syiems, and related legal proceedings, arguing that these developments raised concerns about the party’s ability to administer effectively."
Pala questioned how the VPP expects to handle higher levels of government if they cannot manage a district council. He predicts a triangular fight for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election. The race will feature the Congress, the National People’s Party, and the VPP. Voters will finalize their choices only after officials announce the contest and candidates file their nominations.
