Meghalaya Secures India's First Bamboo Forest Certification

Shillong: Meghalaya just clinched India’s first Forest Stewardship Council certification for natural bamboo forest management. The win covers smallholders across five villages. It marks a major shift for the state. The recognition follows a grueling two-year drive led by the Centre of Excellence for Natural Resource Management and Sustainable Livelihoods.

The team created new methods that met strict FSC standards. This pilot program spans more than 250 hectares of forest. It provided technical training to local workers and project staff. Success brings more than just a label.

Certified bamboo now opens the door to premium markets. Several industrial firms already want to buy this supply directly from local growers. Officials say the state plans to push this program into hundreds of additional villages. According to the Centre of Excellence, "The certification unlocks significant economic opportunities for growers."
