Kohima: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spotlighted local millet farming success stories during the 139th edition of his Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast on Sunday, October 25. He focused on community-driven agricultural shifts across Meghalaya and Nagaland.

In the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, farmer Chekjing Sangma transformed his operation in Sadolpara village. Sangma adopted modern techniques to cultivate millets. The transition boosted his personal income while sparking a wave of interest among neighbors.

The Prime Minister also turned his attention to Kezoma village in the Kohima district of Nagaland. Farming in that region had stalled for over a decade. "An entire generation had grown up unfamiliar with a crop once cultivated by their grandparents," Modi noted.

The community restarted millet production in 2024. By 2025, the village hosted its first millet festival. Modi pointed to these two states as prime examples of how local groups can revive traditional crops to build agricultural awareness.
