Kohima: Vesalu Puro turned a local flower hobby into a full-scale inter-state operation. The farmer from Phek, Nagaland, now ships her blooms to buyers in Delhi and Mumbai. She grew up watching her parents work the land. The path to business started in 2021.
Puro identified rising demand for flowers during weddings and festivals. She sought professional training at the local Krishi Vigyan Kendra to sharpen her skills. She later planted thousands of gladiolus bulbs on a quarter-acre plot. The first harvest hit 5,000 flowers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spotlighted her success during Sunday's 137th episode of his radio program, Mann Ki Baat. Modi said, "Puro's experience showed how passion, sustained effort and access to the right guidance can help farmers create new avenues of income." Her journey now serves as a national example of converting personal interests into sustainable livelihoods.
