Kohima: The Nagaland Department of Horticulture launched a floriculture mission on July 30 at its Kohima directorate. This sensitisation programme targeted farmers from Kohima, Chümoukedima, Dimapur, and Niuland. The mission focuses on the commercial production of Anthurium and Lilium to lift local incomes and build a sustainable market.
Officials want to turn flower farming into a solid business. The government promises three years of technical guidance and handholding support for all selected beneficiaries. This package includes a buy back policy to ensure the units survive long term. The department brought in M/s North Bengal Floritech as the service provider to manage the technical side.
Director Ayieno Hibo opened the event by stressing the need for viable enterprise. Akumla Chuba, Commissioner and Secretary of the department, told farmers to ditch old methods. She said, "the immense potential of floriculture in creating sustainable livelihood opportunities" demands they adopt scientific cultivation practices. Experts from North Bengal Floritech led technical sessions on how to manage and care for the crops after planting. The project concluded with a question session for the farmers.
