Public hearing on Shillong ropeway sparks local dissent

Shillong: A public hearing for the proposed Shillong ropeway project turned into a battle over transparency. Only 27 people showed up. Banrikupar Wahlang, an executive committee member of the Riat Laban Dorbar Pyllun, slammed the government for claiming this attendance equated to public consent. The gathering was supposed to address environmental impacts and project goals. It was not a vote.

Wahlang, who also advises the Kynjat Phutbol Dorbar Shnong, insists the attendance sheet is just a list of names. It carries no weight as an endorsement. He noted that no decisions were reached at the meeting. "An attendance sheet cannot be treated as proof that the people have agreed to the project," he said.

The government needs to slow down. Wahlang warned authorities to explain the project objectives and potential downsides before moving ahead. He also stood up for the women of Riat Laban Pyllun who oppose the plan, noting their complete absence from the government-led meeting.
