Shillong: Street lights along the Guwahati-Shillong Highway will turn on soon. Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Saini confirmed the news today. The project covers key zones like Byrnihat and Nongpoh. These lights aim to fix visibility issues that have long plagued nighttime drivers on this major corridor.
The plan comes after a strategy meeting between the Ri-Bhoi district administration, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, and the local MLA. They met to address the dark stretches that dot the route between Assam and Meghalaya. The highway handles a constant crush of commercial trucks, tourist buses, and private cars every day.
More lights are on the way. "We have proposed more street lights in Nongpoh and beyond," Saini said. Authorities hope these changes will lower hazards for everyone on the road. The activation of existing fixtures is the first step toward clearing the darkness.
