Shillong: The All Meghalaya Truck Owners and Drivers Welfare Association will join the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd for an inspection Monday. The teams meet at 11 am to identify official truck lay-bys. They must assess whether current facilities meet the needs of heavy vehicle operators along the Mawryngkneng-Jorabat highway stretch.
NHIDCL claims two lay-bys currently serve the Jorabat-Barapani route, with one more available on the Jowai-Ratacherra road. Association president Wanshwa Nongtdu argues these sites are insufficient for the current traffic volume. Drivers hauling clinker and cement from Lumshnong frequently crowd into petrol pumps because they lack safe places to stop.
Nongtdu warned of the dangers inherent in the current setup. "If they continue to ply without proper rest, it can be unsafe. Driver fatigue can lead to brake-related problems or road accidents, putting both truckers and smaller vehicles at risk," he said. The association wants drivers to attend the inspection to learn where they can safely park.
