Ri-Bhoi Officials Target Highway Truck Parking Crisis

Shillong: Ri-Bhoi district authorities are teaming up with the National Highways Authority of India and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited to fix a dangerous shortage of truck parking along National Highway 6. Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini confirmed the plan following tense discussions with the Meghalaya Commercial Trucks Owners and Drivers Association.

Drivers face constant trouble finding spots. Saini is now scouting land for dedicated parking bays. The administration expects to include association representatives in upcoming District Road Safety Committee meetings. They will sit alongside police and highway officials to hammer out long-term fixes.

Immediate relief is thin. The district asked local petrol pump operators to host a few trucks as a stopgap measure. Saini also reached out to the Kamrup district administration in Assam. He wants them to stretch existing no-entry hours to give drivers more time to reach secure spots. Saini noted, "The administration is identifying suitable locations for truck parking in consultation with NHAI and NHIDCL." Ongoing talks remain the only path forward for the busy corridor.
