Shillong: Monsoon rains turned South West Garo Hills roads into death traps. Commuters fight deep potholes and slick mud every day. The situation hit a breaking point on Tuesday, September 29, when a goods-laden Mahindra pickup flipped at Grazing Field. The driver was heading toward the Ampati headquarters from the Purakhasia weekly market when the vehicle lost traction on the broken surface.
This wreck occurred on the Ampati-Anangpara-Salmanpara-Purakhasia road. Locals report that routes through Mahendraganj and Zikzak are in just as bad shape. The roads are failing. Mud and standing water make the passage hazardous for students, patients, and pregnant women. Business owners and government workers also face constant delays.
Residents are tired of empty promises. They claim politicians offer better infrastructure only during election cycles. One local resident noted the miserable conditions, saying the roads are "like paddy fields." The community is now demanding the Meghalaya government take immediate action to fix the routes and ensure safe travel for the region.
