Shillong: A landslide slammed into the Highway Refill Centre at 10th Mile in Ri-Bhoi district on Friday morning. The hill behind the Indian Oil Corporation petrol pump collapsed, raining debris onto the site. Equipment and infrastructure took a beating. A bus parked on the property sustained partial damage as well.
The trouble started early. Staff were working and vehicles were refueling when a small slide began. The situation turned severe at 3 am. A large section of the hillside gave way, burying parts of the fuel station under dirt and stone. The station manager noted, "The slide initially began on a minor scale while staff were on duty and vehicles were still pulling in to refuel."
Luck held out for everyone involved. The incident hit during the quietest hours of the night. No injuries or deaths were reported.
