Shillong: Ri-Bhoi district officials shuttered the back section of Gorkha Nepali Secondary School in Borbhuin village. A July 20 landslide left the campus unsafe. Deputy Commissioner and District Disaster Management Authority Chairperson Dr. Abhishek Saini issued the order. Persistent rain triggered the slope failure.
Students keep attending class in the parts of the building deemed structurally sound. The school must now rope off the danger zone. They also have to post clear warning signs. "The back portion of the building is vulnerable to further slope failure due to persistent rainfall," officials confirmed during their site inspection.
Management must inform parents and staff about the new safety rules immediately. The Public Works Department and local Dorbar Shnong are clearing debris and fixing the access road. They will wait for better weather before finishing the job. Officials are watching the hillside for any fresh movement.
Residents in Nongkylla Khasi and Borbhuin villages need to stay alert. Move to higher ground or relief shelters if things look bad. Do not hang around the disaster zone. The District School Education Officer will track compliance. Police and block leaders are handling traffic and potential evacuations. This order stays active until further notice.
