Shillong: A landslide killed one child and injured three others in Umlamphlang village early Monday morning. Prolonged, torrential rainfall triggered the collapse in Meghalaya's Ri Bhoi district within the Mawhati constituency. Rescue crews pulled the survivors from the debris before rushing them to receive medical treatment. Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar spoke on the tragedy. He said, "I express deep grief over the tragedy."
The rain caused more chaos. Flash floods tore through Umling and Umladoh at midnight. Families fled their homes as mud and floodwaters buried their belongings. The storm also wrecked the Umling Health and Wellness Centre. Water submerged the maternity ward, along with medicine, equipment, and records.
Roads remain broken. Landslides and washed-out sections blocked the Umling-Patharkhmah road. Vehicles cannot move through the area. Authorities are currently assessing the damage across the district. Residents now face the struggle of rebuilding while demanding immediate government relief and road repairs.
