Shillong: Students from nine Ri-Bhoi district colleges gathered at Union Christian College on Monday for a two-day Youth Parliament. Sponsored by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, the event focuses on democratic leadership and civic duty. Participants will hold mock sessions to debate the National Education Policy 2020 and how social media affects mental health.
Speaker Thomas A Sangma opened the event with a call for fresh ideas. He told the room that parliaments turn ideas into public policy through debate and amendment. The program helps students see how leaders solve problems with dialogue instead of conflict. The future relies on cooperation. "The future of any democracy depends on how well its citizens can talk, listen, and work together," Sangma stated.
He noted that Meghalaya tradition favors consensus and discussion. Deputy Chief Whip Ronnie V Lyngdoh added that young minds keep government institutions honest and accountable. Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma organized the program to build critical thinking, public speaking, and parliamentary etiquette.
Principal Dr. RM Manih and coordinator Dr. JP Marak joined faculty members to observe the proceedings. The simulation aims to ground students in integrity and active citizenship as they learn the machinery of government.
