KSU Imposes Strict Fishing Ban on West Jaintia Hills River

Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Barato Unit has officially outlawed indiscriminate fishing along the Mynriang river in West Jaintia Hills. This move follows a recent fishing competition and the release of new fingerlings at Thlunar Tyrsoo. They mean business.

The union designated the Thlunar Tyrsoo stretch as a formal fish sanctuary. Fishing is now strictly prohibited from Khlieh Khriang to Trai Khriang along the Yingkein river. Visiting anglers cannot stay overnight unless a local resident accompanies them.

Crews have erected signboards to warn off violators. The new rules ban the use of explosives, chemical poisoning, and fishing nets. The union also prohibited dumping garbage or waste into the water. The KSU Barato Unit stated, "The union has erected signboards outlawing the use of explosives, chemical poisoning, and fishing nets, as well as the dumping of garbage and waste into the water."

Violators face immediate legal action. The KSU asked all visiting anglers to cooperate with the community to keep the river safe. Officials plan to review and update these restrictions on a regular basis.
