KSU Issues Warning Over Detained Leader’s Failing Health

Shillong: The Khasi Students Union says the government owns any harm done to vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet. He remains locked up since August 19 for his role in the bike-rally case. His health is sliding. The union warns that if he gets worse, the state takes the blame.

Sanmiet suffers from chronic nosebleeds. Doctors at Bethany Hospital ordered surgery back in September, but the jail stint blocked the operation. Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew, the union’s environmental secretary, said, "The surgery could not be performed because of his continued detention."

Medical issues persist. Sanmiet faced blood-pressure spikes on September 16 and October 3. Doctors at Shillong Civil Hospital sent him to NEIGRIHMS for care, but he wants to stick with his doctors at Bethany Hospital. The detention also hurts his PhD work in Law at North-Eastern Hill University. He missed mandatory monthly filings for June and September.

The union filed a new bail motion. Kharbihkhiew expects the court to make the right call.
