Shillong: A District Sessions Court in Shillong denied bail to Pynkmenlang Sanmiet on Wednesday. Sanmiet, the vice-president of the Khasi Students Union, remains in custody. He is one of three top union figures locked up following recent incidents in the city.
Defense counsel from the KSU Central Executive Council argued for his release on health grounds. They pointed to Sanmiet’s poor medical condition. The judge denied the request without immediate comment on the reasoning. Sanmiet sits behind bars with KSU president Raymond Kharjana and general secretary Reuben Najiar.
Authorities transferred the trio back to Shillong District Jail on Tuesday. They had previously spent time in facilities in Tura and Williamnagar. Talks between the union and the Meghalaya government took place on Wednesday, but the arrests did not surface as a topic for discussion.
Former general secretary Donald V. Thabah stated the leadership remains focused on their core agenda rather than their own legal battles. He relayed a message from the detainees regarding their priorities. "The arrested leaders told us that their being in jail is not a matter of concern. What they are concerned about is the charter of demands," Thabah said.
