Shillong: Meghalaya Police took a sixth Khasi Students’ Union leader into custody Friday night. The Special Investigation Team apprehended the president of the KSU Shillong East Circle near NEIGRIHMS. He faces charges linked to the violent bike rally held in Shillong on August 19. Five other KSU leaders remain in judicial custody.
These suspects include president Raymond Kharjana, vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, general secretary Reuben Najiar, assistant organising secretary Jeremaiah Pohthmi, and Mihngi Circle general secretary Samuel Kharbani. The East Khasi Hills district administration had originally greenlit the rally. It turned ugly fast. Participants pelted stones at bystanders and vehicles.
The violence wrecked 31 vehicles, including several registered in Assam. At least 18 people suffered injuries during the chaos. This sparked immediate fallout between the two states. Transport operators in Assam blocked Meghalaya-registered vehicles at Jorabat and Khanapara in retaliation. A police officer stated: "The Meghalaya government has maintained that the investigation will proceed strictly according to law and that no individual or organisation would be allowed to influence the legal process."
Investigators booked the leaders under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The SIT continues its work. The accused East Circle president appeared before a local court on Saturday.
