Shillong: Shillong police stepped up security checkpoints throughout the city. Officers are now targeting the night and early morning hours. This move follows a wave of petrol bomb attacks on police stations and government offices. Public property has also seen damage.
East Khasi Hills Additional Superintendent of Police Lovish Garg was injured during a stop at Urkaliar near Samkhamti Petrol Pump. It happened early Friday morning. A scooty carrying two people sped up when ordered to stop. The vehicle hit Garg, sending him to Woodland Hospital where he was moved to the HD Unit. Police arrested both suspects. They now face 14 days of judicial custody on attempted murder charges.
Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage to track down suspects in the broader string of attacks. The Civil Society Women’s Organisation issued a formal plea for public calm. President Agnes Kharshiing noted that officers deserve to work without facing harm. She stated, “Such acts endanger lives, threaten public safety and cause destruction of property belonging to the public.”
Kharshiing asked citizens to hand over any security footage that might help investigators. Police continue to monitor vehicle movement at key locations. They are asking all drivers to follow officer instructions during these stops. The intensified security operations will remain in place until further notice.
