East Khasi Hills Tightens Security for 80th Independence Day

Shillong: East Khasi Hills police are on high alert for the 80th Independence Day. Officers have secured vulnerable spots across the district. Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the massive security operation on Friday. "Elaborate arrangements have been made for the celebrations," Syiem said. Officials stationed several companies of additional forces at key locations for round-the-clock patrol. Tactical teams are ready. The state's primary flag-hoisting ceremony takes place at Shillong's Polo Grounds, with additional events set for Sohra and Pynursla.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma will lead the salute in Shillong. Other dignitaries will oversee parades statewide. This includes Timothy D. Shira in Nongstoin, Marcuise N. Marak in Nongpoh, and Thomas A. Sangma in Jowai. Lahkmen Rymbui, Sniawbhalang Dhar, Damanbait Lamare, Prestone Tynsong, Brening A. Sangma, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, Wailadmiki Shylla, and Metbah Lyngdoh will host ceremonies in their respective districts. The Governor hosts an At-Home reception at Lok Bhavan at 11 am.

Public perks arrive tomorrow. Entry to Phan Nonglait Park and Ward’s Lake is free. Ward’s Lake hosts programs starting at 2 pm. Anjalee Cinema and Bijou Cinema offer free screenings at 9 am. Furthermore, the state recognized three officers for the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service. Superintendent Abraham T. Sangma, Commandant Herbert Garnet Lyngdoh, and Havildar Kmenlang Suting received the honors for their service.

At the Polo Grounds, Sangma took the Rashtriya Salute from contingents representing the BSF, CRPF, local police, NCC, and schools. The Sohiong C&RD Block took an award for a new footpath and viewpoint at Domkopher Mawdngung. Officials also recognized Col. Vinay Kumar and two 93-year-old veterans, Naik Jedro Thabah and Col. Memorialda Nongsiej.

Sangma used his address to track eight years of governance, pointing to gains in forest conservation, rural water, and road networks. March past honors at the Polo Grounds went to Holy Cross Higher Secondary School for first place, while St. Edmund’s and St. John’s took second and third. St. Mary’s and St. Margaret’s topped the brass band competition. Cultural displays featured students from Synod, Mary Mount, and BSF Higher Secondary Schools.

Public life in Shillong saw new cultural initiatives. The Crayons Art Gallery and Studio opened on Bivar Road with the Freedom of Expression exhibition. Meanwhile, the Office of the Principal Accountant General and the Regional Capacity Building and Knowledge Institute held flag ceremonies at Motinagar, Laitumkhrah, and the institute premises, followed by tug-of-war and musical chair competitions for children.
