Shillong: Meghalaya is turning the former Raj Bhavan into a public space. Officials renamed the governor's residence as Lok Bhavan to signal its shift into an institution for the people. This location will open its gates to the public on August 15 and 16 to celebrate the 80th Independence Day. Entry costs nothing.
Doors open from 1:30 pm to 8 pm on August 15. The facility runs from 11 am to 8 pm on August 16. The government wants the residence to serve as a public institution rather than a ruler's house. The building will glow in the colors of the Tricolour on the night of August 15.
Visitors can see cultural shows from across India. The lineup features Kalbelia and Bhawai dances from Rajasthan. Jammu and Kashmir will present Dogri, Kashmiri, Gojri, and Pahari performances. Karnataka sends Bharatanatyam dancers and a troupe from the Karnataka Sangha, Mandya. Local Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities will display their heritage. The Assam Regimental Centre’s military band also performs.
Exhibitions will cover agriculture, floriculture, and horticulture. These displays include new technology, flowers, and orchids. Guests can view traditional artefacts, handicrafts, and manuscripts. Food stalls will serve local cuisine. Organizers hope the event shows that "the governor's residence is a public institution."
