Shillong: Manipur officials are taking their fight for a National Register of Citizens update to the federal government. State spokesperson Sapam Ranjan Singh confirmed in Imphal on Tuesday that the government is pushing the Centre to act. They want a fix for illegal migration and shifts in local demographics. It is a top priority.
The state legislature has pushed for this move twice. The Manipur Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on August 5, 2022, and backed it up again on March 1, 2024. State leaders have sent multiple letters to the Union home ministry to keep the pressure on. Now, a delegation of MLAs will travel to New Delhi to press the case in person.
Singh noted that the government backs the public demand to prioritize the NRC before the upcoming Census. He called for unity across all groups to protect the state. As he put it, “The issue needs to be addressed collectively, irrespective of political party, community or other differences, as it concerns the future of the state and people.”
Protests continue to hit the streets. Singh urged the public to keep demonstrations peaceful. He asked locals to avoid violence and spare the public from further disruption as the state pursues its federal goals.
