Meghalaya Update: Flooding Disputes, Legal Voids, and Job Drives

Shillong: Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun fired back at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 17. The minister rejected claims that Meghalaya development caused flooding in Jorabat and Guwahati. He blamed poor road construction by the National Highways Authority of India instead. Commuters struggle as officials scramble for a fix. Ri-Bhoi district administrators are trying to keep the highway clear during heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the Jaintia National Council filed an FIR at Jowai Police Station on August 17. They targeted a Facebook page called Nongkyndong Daily for spreading fake news. The page falsely claimed the JNC president backed the NPP for an upcoming election. The JNC president urged the public to choose carefully because of the, "suffering and injustice," seen under the current government. The group insists it is a welfare body, not a political party.

Legal chaos hit Shella village. The Shella Dorbar Shnong scrapped every court decision issued from 2022 to 2026. Secretary Tobias Tiewdop said the court lacked mandatory Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council approval. It violated 1953 justice rules under chairman Readerforce Sarubai. Residents who paid for land surveys now face uncertain legal standing. The Dorbar wants Sarubai removed immediately.

Finally, over 300 youths met in Laitkyrhong on Monday. They sought training in nursing, healthcare, hospitality, and IT. Mawkynrew MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh attended the recruitment drive. The state government aims to boost skills for work here and abroad.
