Local Entrepreneurs Report Big Sales at Shillong Independence Day Exhibition

Shillong: Crowds packed Lok Bhavan on August 16 for the second day of the Colors of India exhibition. Farmers and artisans moved serious stock during the Independence Day event. PRIME Meghalaya, the Meghalaya State Agricultural Marketing Board, MEGNOLIA, and the Department of Arts and Culture teamed up to run the show. The event connected local producers with buyers eager for regional goods.

Nokma Ice Creams had a massive day. Polison D. Momin, who runs the cooperative started this year, confirmed the business sold over 3,000 units on August 15 alone. He said the group, backed by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency, pulled in more than Rs 1 lakh. Meanwhile, Tengchi A. Sangma of South Garo Hills saw her business, Tengchi Brave Stitch, rake in Rs 25,000 in one day. Sangma won the 2025 Entrepreneurship Challenge and received a Rs 2 lakh grant to scale up.

The venue hosted a mix of ventures. Stone carver Darsing Siemlieh from West Khasi Hills brought his craft to the public after being incubated by PRIME Meghalaya in 2023. Other exhibitors included the Mushroom Development Centre, Meghalaya Collectives, and the Women’s Group & Handicrafts Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society. These groups showcased everything from chrysanthemums to traditional handiwork.

Performers filled the stage between sales pitches. The Karnataka Sangha put on a show called Devi Mahima: The Glory of Nari Shakti. Mysore dancer Prajna Kashyap performed a Bharatanatyam piece to Vande Mataram. Acts from Rajasthan, Kashmir, and local Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo dance groups also took the floor. The event continues to merge state industry with national traditions.
