Shillong Hoteliers Demand Restored Regional Flights

Shillong: The Federation of Shillong Hotels is pushing the state government to fast-track Shillong Airport expansion and reboot regional air routes. These services once linked the city to Silchar, Agartala, Dimapur, Dibrugarh, and Guwahati before officials pulled the plug. They need them back now.

Federation President Parambir Singh argues that restoring these connections is a simple move that helps local tourism immediately. Current data shows that over half of the region's visitors come exclusively to see Meghalaya. Direct flights change the math. "Once the airport is fully functional and tourists land directly in Meghalaya, the reliance on outside taxis will decrease. This will be a win-win situation for local taxi operators and provide hassle-free travel for visitors," Singh said.

Construction crews are already working on the runway. All official clearances are in hand. The project should wrap up in 15 months, clearing the way for larger aircraft to land. Until then, the Federation maintains that keeping the current network alive remains the best path forward for the state economy.
