Shillong Faces Tourism Crisis as Road Repairs Stall

Shillong: Shillong roads are falling apart. Potholes and uneven surfaces plague both quiet lanes and heavy traffic routes. The city infrastructure looks abandoned. Maintenance has stalled across much of the road network.

The government sanctioned 45 crore rupees for repairs to fix the mess. While officials fixed a few select sections, most of the city remains in bad shape. Essential work exists only on paper. Work continues behind the MTC building, but that is not enough.

This failure hits as Shillong prepares for upcoming festivals. Music, literature, and cultural events will pull in crowds soon. Guests staying at hotels, homestays, and Airbnb properties face a rough ride just to find their beds. Bad roads sour the traveler experience from the start. Locals and visitors deserve better.

The city relies on hospitality to thrive. Officials must finish the job before the peak season arrives. The current state of the streets fails the visitors. As one report noted: "The condition is not limited to the quieter lanes; several busy routes that residents and visitors use every day are equally neglected." If these gaps remain, the city risks its reputation.
